The drama, chaotic situation, everything just happened a night before at the UEFA Champions League draw when Man Utd emerged as Villarreal’s opponent in the last 16 draws.
According to Sport News BD, it was never meant to be. Because the rule says, two clubs that have played against each other in the group stage cannot be drawn together again. Besides, two clubs from the same association cannot play each other at the Round of 16.
So, UEFA had to re-do the entire draw and as a result, the possibility of watching Man Utd vs PSG is no longer there. UEFA authorities have declared the issue as a technical problem and tweeted about it.
UEFA said in a tweet, “Following a technical problem with the software of an external service provider that instructs the officials as to which teams are eligible to play each other, a material error occurred in the draw for the UEFA Champions League Round of 16.”
As per the new draw, PSG and Real Madrid are paired for the Round of 16. Man Utd will now face Atletico Madrid, instead of its previous opponent PSG.
Fans might be upset after the re-draw but the Argentine superstar, Lionel Messi is still excited about the Knockout rounds.
“The objective for PSG is to win the Champions League, that’s everyone’s aim,” he said at the Dubai Expo 2020.
“The team has been very close before. It’s an essential competition for all teams. We’ll try to win it.”
However, one interesting thing happened in the redraw. The English club Chelsea will face the French club Lille. Chelsea also got Lille as an opponent in the previous draw.
The first-leg matches of the last 16 will be from 15-23 February, and the return games are from 8-16 March.
