Bangladesh won their first match in SAFF football with an excellent victory over Bhutan. They defeated Bhutan by 2-0.
Bhutan has always been a weak opposition against Bangladesh in the SAFF football. At least the past records will say so. Bangladesh has won 3 times out of 4 meetings at SAFF, and another match was drawn. But in field play, statistics and records are not always useful at all. Because, in the pre-selection phase of Asia Cup two years ago, Bangladesh lost to Bhutan quite shamefully by 3-1 and that caused them a two years exile from the international football.
After the 2 years of deportation from international football, Bangladesh’s start was not very bad. Keeping in view the SAFF football, Bangladesh has organized training camps in Qatar and Korea. And somewhat from that camp, the new coach Jamie Day has brought a look back to the party. It was proved a bit by the team’s history-making performance in the Asian Games a few days earlier.
But after this, against Bhutan, Bangladesh team was a bit of concern about the match. However, by removing all the fears, Jamie day’s disciples got their expected results.
Bangladesh started playing aggressive football from the very beginning of the match. As a result, Bangladesh got the corner from Bhutan at the 3rd minute of the match. However, Bangladesh didn’t score from the corner kick. Instead, they have got the easiest chance to score a goal from that corner.
Bhutan’s Tshering Dorji pushed a Bangladeshi player in the box during the competition to head the cross from the corner kick. And in the meantime, Thai match referee showed him the yellow card and awarded Bangladesh with an early penalty. Bangladesh’s defender Topu Barman did not miss this golden opportunity to put his name in the scoresheet. Bangladesh has got the lead just inside the 4th minute of the match.
After this early lead, Bangladesh has continued to play their aggressive football in progress. But in the middle of the first half, Bangladesh almost gifted a goal to the opponent due to a horrible mistake by the defence. Somehow, Bhutan has been derived from the equaliser while their striker missed a setter. So, Bangladesh went to the halftime break with their one-goal lead.
At the beginning of the second half, Bangladesh continued their aggressive mood once again. Bangladesh striker Mahbubur Rahman Sufil scored a beauty with an excellent finishing and gave the team a 2-0 lead in the 47th minute. The Strikers enter into the box from the right side of and placed the ball into the left post with a powerful half-volley.
However, the Bangladesh team started to feel relaxed after having the 2-0 lead. Since then, Jamal Bhuiyan-Mamunul’s team were playing in a defensive approach. And during that period, Jamie Day’s disciples were not very enjoyable to see. But this tactics was quite effective. Because, with this tactics, Bangladesh didn’t go to score too many goals, but it never seemed that they could concede a goal either.
So after the match, coach Jamie Day praised his disciples. And he also said, “It was very important to win the first match to avoid the difficulties of group points in the latter part of the tournament”
The next game of Bangladesh in the group stage will be held on September 6 against Pakistan. Hopefully, Bangladesh team will ensure the semi-finals with an effective win in that match as well.
