On Saturday, the Gujarat Titans (GT) won a last-over thriller against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by 8 runs. This one is the 6th victory for the Titans in 7 matches in IPL 2022, and right now, they are leading the table.
Hardik Pandya led from the front, who also missed the previous match due to injury, scored 67 – his third successive half-century helped Gujarat anchor a competitive total of 167 for nine wickets in Mumbai after they elected to bat first.
KKR’s batting lineup looked shaky as they lost two early wickets of Sam Billings and Sunil Narine. Mohammad Shami was able to take these two wickets.
Nitish Rana was the next man dismissed after he was caught behind Lockie Ferguson’s bowling. This left KKR with 34-3 at the end of the powerplay. After that, Shreyas Iyer was caught behind in Yash Dayal’s over and this was his first wicket of the innings.
Kolkata reached 50 within 8 overs and Rinku Singh, as well as Venketesh Iyer, kept running between the wicket.
Kolkata lost wickets in a regular interval and the team was in deep trouble. Beating the Titans looked like a tough nut to crack for the Knight Riders until Russell attempted a one-man army show.
Though Andre Russell was caught in the 13th over. But he survived as Yash Dayal over-stepped and the umpire signaled ‘No ball.”
In the end, Russell was the only one to make any significant contribution with the bat, but Venkatesh Iyer was dismissed shortly afterward. Rashid Khan was the key bowler to break this partnership and according to the Sport News BD experts, that particular moment changed the momentum of the match.
KKR needed 50 runs in five overs with three wickets in hand. In the 16th over Rashid Khan bagged Shivam Mavi to claim his second wicket of the match and his outstanding bowling performance had brought him the Man of the Match award. With these wickets, Rashid Khan bagged 100 IPL wickets.
After the post-match presentation, Rashid Khan said, “Definitely it was a great win in IPL 2022 season. The way Hardik batted at the top and took us to a good total. Shami, Joseph, and Yash bowled well and we tried to keep it tight. Luckily I got those two wickets and I am happy to be on the winning side.”
On the other end, Shreyas Iyer looked very disappointed as they had their last four matches very close but they failed to convert those into a win in this IPL 2022 season. 158 was a decent score to get past but the credit goes to the Titan bowlers who kept the game in their control.
