Copa America: Brazil vs. Peru Match Summary

Brazil has reached the Copa America final after a hard-fought 1-0 win over Peru. They will face the winner of tomorrow’s second semi-final between Argentina and Colombia. 

After defeating Peru by 4-0 in the group match, everyone thought this might be an easy win for Brazil. But praise to Peru. They gave a solid fight! Though they lost the match. 

Keeping in mind that Brazil has won the Copa America every time they hosted the tournament. 

From the beginning of the match, Brazil was made to work really hard as Peru started with confidence. Clearly, it was an indication of a tough match.

Within the first 15 minutes, Brazil had almost 3 half chances to take the lead. In the 8th minute, an assist by Paqueta to Richarlison and then Richarlison to Neymar couldn’t find the goal post. Then in the 12th minute, Casemiro took a free-kick. This time the shot was straight at the keeper, Pedro Gallese. He grabbed the ball at a comfortable height. 

Again in the 19th minute, Paqueta with a wonderful cut back from the right, which found Neymar. It was almost a goal. But this time the goalkeeper Gallese came as a hero and saved the shot from point-blank range. It seemed like the ball had hit him on his face.

Peru was all under pressure. Both the teams had their chances and Brazil was eager to make a goal. They were showing some skills, backheels but it took them 35 minutes to break the deadlock.

The long wait came to an end. It was an assist from Neymar who showed his fancy footwork which allowed him to escape three defenders and squared the ball to Paqueta. With no defender around, Paqueta volleyed the ball home from 10 meters. This was the only winning goal throughout the whole match.

What a tournament for him so far!

In the second half, the scenario was quite different. Peru missed some good opportunities to score the level. This time Brazil was under pressure which was totally missing in the first half. Callens had a great chance, but he missed the goal. 

In the end, Brazilian coach Tite must be happy. He said, “In these Copa America matches we play a mental marathon.”

“It was a very tough game, very hard-fought,” Paqueta said. “They are a very strong side but we managed to make it through a difficult spell.” 

Neymar also added, “Paqueta is a great player, he’s getting better with each game.” “He had a great season with his club and here he is showing that he can be a very important player for Brazil.”  

“Today we were solid at the back, everyone helped, that’s the spirit to win titles,” midfielder Casemiro said. “Now it is all about mentality and heart. You don’t play a final, you win a final.”

“I want Argentina in the final,” Neymar said after the match at the Nilton Santos Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. “I am cheering for them because I have many friends there. In the final, Brazil will win,” he added, laughing.
