Once again Mexico failed to break the “curse of the fifth game.”
Since 1994 Mexico have played seven successive “round of 16” stage and each time they have suffered seven “cursed” defeats. This time they were defeated by Brazil. Maybe the most horrible situation was the last world cup.
They were 1-0 ahead with two minutes remaining.
But the stoppage time killed their dream.,They started this world cup like the comet when they defeated the reigning champion Germany. But the last two successive defeats have taught them a lot to stay on the ground always.
Hot favourite Brazil played like a champion today. After Germany, Argentina, Spain many fans thought it could be their last match in this world cup. But Neymar-Coutinho proved them wrong.
While Mexico had the seventh “round of 16” defeat in a row since 1994, at the same time, Brazil made their seventh quarter-final successively where they are going to face either Japan or Belgium.
At first, Mexico almost got their first goal. In the 2nd minute of the match, Mexico’s Guardado crossed the ball to the goal post from the left side. The Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson was forced to punch the ball.
Then the punched ball dropped in front of Mexico’s Hirving Lozano. Lozano Slowed down the ball and took a shot on target. But Miranda blocked his shot.
Mexico didn’t just stop there. They tried so many attacks down the left flank. Brazil was looking so vulnerable to these focused and fearless attacks.
Brazil was slowly gearing up for a breakthrough. They were about to get a goal with Neymar’s angle. But his shot was blocked by the Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa.
Gabriel Jesus had got another opportunity to score in 33 minutes. A long pass from midfield came to Jesus. He then passed it to Coutinho. It was looking like he was going to take a shot.
But seeing two Mexican defenders there, he then gave it again to Jesus. Jesus took a shot like Neymar before and once again the goalkeeper blocked his shot. Both the teams finished the half-time with 0-0.
Neymar picked the right time to score when Brazil was looking for a breakthrough. Five minutes after the half-time, Willian’s clever cross found Neymar and Neymar didn’t make any mistake to score at such a close range.
“This was Brazil’s 227th goal in the world cup history.” Germany is the only team to cross 200 goals.
Mexico got some chances to level the score. But Brazil’s goalkeeper stood ground to block each attempt of Mexico.
In the 86th minute, Firmino came as a substitute. Within 2 minutes remaining he scored a goal for Brazil which led them 2-0 in the match. Neymar’s toe-poke shot was partially saved by Ochoa. Unfortunately, he made it easier for Firmino to score with a single touch.
This time Mexico was not looking like to get back to the game. After the final whistle, we got another quarterfinalist of this world cup.
Till now Neymar’s shots were on target for 12 times off 23 times. He has also created the most goal-scoring chances (14) for his teammates in this world cup so far which are the highest by any player.
