#3 Mohammad Ashraful 158* vs India, Chittagong, 2004

How a pure gem can turn out to be a serious controversy? Mohammad Ashraful is such an example of that. But today, we are not going to discuss such things. Instead, we will focus one of his best innings in Test cricket.

Ashraful, the wonder kid of Bangladesh cricket, started his international journey with a magnificent hundred against such a quality bowling of Sri Lanka at the age of just 16. Since then he had produced many memorable innings for his country. Though there was always some questions on his consistency, it won’t bother you a lot if you consider the foretime of Bangladesh cricket.

Out of Ashraful’s 6 Test centuries, we prefer it as his best. When he came into bat in 3rd day morning, his side was at 54 for 3 while replying India’s mammoth 540 runs first innings. Therefore, another worst defeat was waiting for Bangladesh against the full strength Indian bowling attack. Eventually, it happened so.

But Ashraful was in a different mood, he started to smash every loose from the word go. He held on to that same momentum while wickets are falling on a regular basis on the other side. At Bangladesh’s first innings, he was unbeaten on 158 runs from just 195 deliveries with 24 fours and 3 maximums. Bangladesh fell onto follow-on by just 7 runs. Later on, they had a collapsed in the 2nd innings and faced an innings defeat.   If he had proper supporters from the other end, the result might be a different story, who knows?

#2 Aminul Islam 145 vs India, Dhaka, 2000

While reminiscing about the most incredible test innings of Bangladesh Cricket, it will be a crime to not mention this epic ton by Aminul Islam in Bangladesh’s inaugural test match against India in November 2000. He was only the third cricketer to score a hundred on his country’s test debut. His 145 runs of 380 balls help Bangladesh to put a dream-total of 400 runs in the first innings.

Eventually, Bangladesh has lost that match by 9 wickets after getting all-out for just 91 runs in the second innings. However, with this brilliant effort from Aminul, Bangladesh had been able to tell the rest cricketing world that we really deserved the Test Status then.

That mature and classic innings from Aminul Islam was a perfect example of patience and temperament. Literally, it always deserves to be on the higher position of any list.

#1 Shahriar Nafees 138 vs Australia, Fatullah, 2006

Here we go with our top choice. Actually, it was the only test hundred scored by Shahriar Nafees. And it’s still the only Test century against Australia by any Bangladeshi batsman. Literally, there are too many reasons to pick this particular inning as the most incredible Test innings by a Bangladeshi Batsman.

It was the bravest innings from the most nostalgic Test match of Bangladesh’s cricket history.  Bangladesh faced the mighty Australian team at home for the very first time in their cricketing history. In fact, that Australian team was undoubtedly one of the best team in the entire history of Test Cricket.

Basically, Bangladesh had nothing to lose so they started with a positive mindset from the word go. Most surprisingly, Shahriar Nafees kept that positive mindset throughout his innings.

In fact, the Australian bowling attack was gigantically armed with legends like Brett Lee, Shane Warne, Jason Gillespie along with Stuart MacGill and Stuart Clark. Nafees faced them all with unbelievable confidence and played all the shots from the cricketing text book.

The whole cricketing world, along with the mighty Aussies got stunned and shocked by a 21-year old Bangladeshi boy on that particular day. Finally, he got bowled on 138 runs of 189 deliveries with 19 excellent boundaries.

Bangladesh might have beaten Australian in Test recently, and probably will beat them again in future, but the regret of missing out a chance of killing a real giant will definitely hunt them always. Without that stunning innings, Bangladesh will never have such opportunities to compete with that mighty Australian side.

This will help you to understand the rarity and the magnificence of that incredibly awesome innings from Shahriar Nafees.
